MY MAPMAKING EXPERIENCE

As a visual learner, I was drawn to cartography early on in my urban planning journey.  A map can have great power in influencing economic decisions, political strategy, and public opinion.  Every aspect of cartography, from data collection to color theory, is enthralling to me.

I have been working with various GIS programs for over two years.  I seek to create maps that communicate ideas clearly and concisely.  I am very eager to use and improve my GIS skills in a planning-related setting.

BIKE SHARE IN CHAPEL HILL

My Geography capstone project analyzed the viability of a bike share in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  After finding that a semi-docked bike share helps to maintain order without excessive cost, I created a suitability map of the town to locate places to construct docking stations.

CAMPUS TRAVEL MODES

This map was a product of a Python script that compared the efficiency of four transportation methods on UNC-CH's campus.  I used bus routes and common commute patterns, as well as average speeds, to estimate travel time.

DEVELOPMENT IN A WATERSHED

One component of my Watershed Planning course at UNC-CH included a suitability map for the local Booker Creek Watershed.  By taking into account topography, floodplain area, wetland area, and existing impervious surfaces, this map helps to locate ideal places for future development.  The western and northern regions of the watershed have ideal land that could be built upon with minimal impact to the watershed's functionality.
